To activate cable internet access, you usually have to call your cable company and give them the hardwired and unique MAC address of your cable modem. It's usually on a sticker on the side or bottom of the modem. Each modem's individual MAC address is how the cable company keeps just anyone from going out and buying a cable modem and getting free internet. Some cable providers track the MAC address of your Ethernet card as well. I suppose that theoretically you could open up the cable modem, find the chip that stores the MAC address, and replace it with a burnt EPROM that you have somehow copied from the chip of a legit cable internet subscriber, but you would probably run into problems if both of your cable modems were online at once.
