For a core bandwidth measurement, I like to use IPNetMonitor's Link Rate function. You tell it your gateway address, and it gives you the speed over just that one hop. http://www.sustworks.com/ For a more general throughput measurement, sites like DSLReports offer fairly decent Java-based tools. But there's a catch: those tests also include the speed at which your machine can run Java, the lag of dozens of hops thru the 'net, and the bog (load) on their test server. Another problem is the fake-megabyte - some sites do calculations based on the odd concept of there being only 1000 bytes in a kilobyte, or 1000 kilobytes in a megabyte...
