A few things...

If you're behind a NAT firewall, you cannot use the IP or name of your real IP address to view the site. You cannot come out of the nat firewall then back in. Use anonymizer.com's free service to check the address or IP and see if it's up.

Also...

Some ISPs block incoming ports. Adelphia.net, my broadband ISP, blocks incoming requests on port 21 (FTP) and 80 (WEB). Obviously, you can get around this by using a different port and then attatching a :81 (or whatever your port is) to the end of the address like: http://mydomain.dyndns.org:81

And on the Wildcard option. I believe this simply directs any additional sub domains at your address. For example, if you register mydomain.dyndns.org and choose wildcard, you can use www.mydomain.dyndns.org or web1.mydomain.dyndns.org, etc etc. It has nothing to do with only local computers being able to use it. Your local machines should be able to see it by IP address (your web servers IP, not your routers or external) unless you have a firewall or connectivity problems between machines.

Good luck,

Chris K.

Try registering at dyndns.org and then download dnsupdate. You need to know whether or not your IP is static or Dynamic. Register for the appropriate service. (It's free for up to I believe 5 free domain names. Most are pretty cool. Mine is htttp://danscott.homeip.net, danscott.kicks-ass.net. This service will forward any call for that domain name to your external IP. Then setup you router to forward any HTTP to you particular computer. One thing, make sure that when you're setting up you accounts with dyndns, that you check the enable wildcard option otherwise you and all computers on you LAN will be able to see you site, but others outside (the Net) wont be able to. This works for me, hopefully it will work for you.

Good Luck

Here is my scenario. DSL connection, DSL modem followed by a d-link
614+ router(wired and wireless) then I have a FP iMac(wired)
Pismo(wireless) and other pcs. My question is, how can I enable web
hosting on the FP. I have tried everything. Set up port forwarding
(called virtual server by the d-link), I set this up to go to the IP of
the iMac. I then tried setting it as a DMZ. I also ventured to the
modem, I found IP passthrough settings and set it to the IP of the
router. I then tried to set the modem with a static NAT to the IP of
the router. I have enabled the personal web sharing of OS X. Nothing
seems to be working. Please help!!!!

Have you tried without the router, just with the computer hooked straight to
the DSL modem? I'm not suggesting it as a permanent solution, just as a way
to see if the problem lies in router settings or somewhere else.

Many ISPs have a rule against running web servers from their service, could
they be blocking it somehow?
