I'm not up on the SC600 but my HP DeskJets are Serial / LocalTalk. When they power up they look for the transmit line echoing into the receive line to indicate they are on a LocalTalk network. If not they switch to Serial. If you use a serial cable to connect them to the EtherPrint they operate in Serial and will tend to print some spurious data (LocalTalk signals interpeted as slower serial characters) which sounds like what is happening to you. Try using LocalTalk or PhoneNet adapters to connect the EtherPrint to the SC.

OK, this sounds like a good explanation for the observed behavior. I see a glimmer of hope, especially with your using an Etherprint on OSX now.

I may try PhoneNet adapter, new (!) to me, is this understanding correct of what I would need:
2 PhoneNet-Localtalk adapters e.g.
1 phone cable

and the chain would be
printer 8 pin port <> PhoneNet <> phone cable <> PhoneNet <> EtherPrint 8 pin port

Is that correct? In checking out PhoneNet I saw a discussion of terminators which confused me.

Don't worry about the terminators if the phoneline is short (less than 10'). -- Clark Martin Redwood City, CA, USA Macintosh / Internet Consulting
