Thanks Clark, (and everybody else). I guess I knew that the  names were
Asynchronous and Synchronous but just slept through typing the  question. My
reason for asking is that I have a DSL line, which I now presume to be ADSL,
and I use a Speedstream 5360 modem which is not marked either ADSL or  SDSL
and I  wanted to  know if the modem I've picked up, Speedstream 5260 ADSL
modem is substantially the same  so that I can figure that I have a back up
that will be plug and  play?
