Yes, interesting puzzle. So the first order of business is for the furnace
to communicate it's temperature twice a day.

Have you checked any furnace manufacturers or air-conditioning companies to
see what they have for this?

There are wireless sensors that can communicate via Ethernet. Perhaps they
could tap into an 802.11 network? (No wires, no dedicated phone line.)

How far away is the monitoring site? Does the furnace have a (reliable)
visible temperature gauge? Perhaps putting one of those wireless security
cameras on it and sending the signal to the receiver would work. You'd need
to add a video-in card to the 9500 or get an 8500 with the ports built-in.

Perhaps relay the data to another computer in the church that you can dial
into?
