A MacOS 9 machine in the middle is the most universal solution to these 
problems. The server in the middle could also be a linux or other 
unix-style box running netatalk.

With 10.3 and 10.2 you can get AppleShare working down to System 
7.something by upgrading the client and/or server components of 
filesharing on the old Mac. But 10.1 and 10.4 are very restrictive in how 
far back you can go (MacOS 9 is the easy answer).

If there's an FTP client for System 6 you could install MacTCP and 
transfer stuff that way.
