OEM news: nVidia switching to 0.13-micron process

An NV25-based card is in the pipe for Apple''s upcoming PMacs, the question is "which
one?"
nVidia president and CEO Huang Jen-hsun told Digitimes that the company is
transitioning the manufacture of its GeForce4 product line to a 0.13-micron process,
which will increase efficiency (smaller chips, more chips per individual wafer) and
reduce costs.
Given nVidia''s top-dog position and Apple''s history of premium pricing, it''s highly
unlikely we''ll feel any of this love on the Mac side.
New Macs, a new GPU
NV-25 based AGP cards (three different chips: Ti4200, Ti4400, Ti4600) are just coming
to market for the PC. Tom''s Hardware has a roundup of specs and benchmarks for 11
NV25 cards for the PC.
Apple''s AGP card OEM -- Visiontek -- has already launched an NV25 for the PC (GeForce
TI 4200). Thereupon it seems likely that Apple''s upcoming DDR Macs will include
NV25-based AGP cards, though perhaps not a top-of-the-line Ti4600-based model.
However, Apple may ship their new PMacs with a low or mid-range NV25 AGP card with the
promise of a BTO option to add a high-end card later.
In addition to the question of which chip Apple will ship is the question of how fast
the memory will be -- NV25 chips support max memory speeds from 500 to 650MHz
depending on model. Visiontech''s Ti4200 card ships with DDR400 memory.
