Report: Apple shuffles educational marketing and sales
By Michael Flaminio, Insanely Great Mac
June 11th 2002

eWeek is reporting that Apple last week reorganized its educational sales and
marketing units.

>From an Apple memo, eWeek is reporting that Apple has made changes within its
>educational sales and marketing groups. The company is reportedly combining these
>groups into a single educational business unit. The new unit will be headed up by
>John Couch, who is returning to Apple where he once oversaw the development of the
>Lisa, the predecessor of the Macintosh. Couch will report to Tim Cook, VP of
>worldwide sales and operations. eWeek notes that Couch was CEO of software developer
>DoubleTwist and the company ceased operations in March 2002.

"Like most markets, the education market has become very competitive," Apple CEO Steve
Jobs is quoted in the memo. "While we are continuing to innovate with new products,
like the eMac, Xserve, Mac OS X and Remote Desktop, we also recognize the need to be
more cohesive and responsive with our education sales and marketing efforts."

Jim Marshall will reportedly continue operating the educational sales group and will
report to Couch, while Cheryl Vedeo will leave the marketing group and work with
Apple''s PowerSchool division. Vedeo will become president of PowerSchool, the
information system management system for schools which Apple purchased last year.

In 2000, Apple overhauled its educational operations with disastrous results. The
reorganization was timed during the summer purchasing period and disrupted sales
efforts. 2000 is seen as a pivotal point the decline of educational market share for
Apple. Since then, Apple has had the appearance of playing catch-up. The company has
undertaken projects geared towards education, namely PowerSchool, iBooks in classrooms
and the recently announced eMac and Xserve.

The latest reorganization appears to be a another shift in strategy. It''s unclear
whether the changes are the result of past strategy performance or perhaps a
combination of performance and the availability of Couch to return to Apple.
