Microsoft''s Office 11 Offers Window into Next Version of Office v.X

Vertical Window dividers: the next stage in Microsoft''s ''innovation''.
The next version of Microsoft Office for Windows, code-named Office 11, may give some
hints about features MS may incorporate into the Mac version.
According to MacWorld UK, the next version of Office for Windows is due in May 2003.
To comprehend the level of innovation that is Microsoft, it''s worthwhile quoting
their Office product manager directly:
"The user interface in Outlook, the email client software that comes with the Windows
Office suite, has been changed to split its window vertically, instead of
horizontally, as it is now. ''That way,'' von Kaenel said, ''users can read emails
like a sheet of paper in a frame on the right side of the window. They will also be
able to set their own taxonomies for how emails are sorted and filed.''"
Analysis: Not rocket science by any means. Can anyone say ''Acrobat''? Better still,
how long has Netscape mail had this feature? Some of these features are in Em@iler for
that matter (still my favorite email client, even in OS X).
The paucity of innovation at MS is truly breathtaking. Maybe Steve needs to be "Kevin
Browne for a month". Then he could fire half the staff, scornfully reject their work,
call them "bozos" who don''t "get it", tell them they have "no taste" and then produce
some killer product like...iMail. Or something.
