Get ready to feed your SuperDrive cheaper disks
Digitimes is reporting that a new round of prices cuts by Taiwanese 1x DVD-R makers of
up to 50 percent will lead to cheaper consumer prices. Recently, blank 1X DVD-R media
has sold for as much as US$2.00 per disk, but that vendors have reduced their asking
price to US$1.00 or less.
However, the digital daily also reports that prices for current top-of-the-line v2.0
2X media is holding stready at US$3.00 per disk. Makers are shifting to production of
v2.0 2X disks so it''s likely even these will see price reductions over the next few
months.
Analysis: Although the disks Apple bundles and sells are made in Japan, price pressure
from Taiwanese makers will have an impact on the market overall and force prices down.
The back-catalog status of 1X disks and the rapid migration to v2.0 2X media by
manufacturers bodes well for prices across the board as makers scramble to squeeze
profits from older product and maximize their return on the newer media. It''s a
vicious cycle that has been repeated in Taiwan dozens of times -- i.e. CD and DVD
drives, USB peripherals, etc -- and invariably leads to lower consumer prices.
