M$ stifling hardware sales?
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
July 9th 2002
A new study suggests that Redmond''s new licensing scheme is sucking the life out of
corporate PC purchases
The Register is carrying a write up about a recent market report from Context that
states "the cost associated with Microsoft''s new licensing system is diverting funds
away from hardware purchases."
Though not the only reason for falling sales cited in the report, it''s telling that
Redmond''s grasping maul appears to biting the hand that feeds it.
The Context report also notes that spending by large businesses is still "extremely
cautious, with many major accounts deferring purchases even longer and choosing to
upgrade equipment rather than replace it."
According to the story, desktop sales were down 14 percent, mobile sales were down 0.3
percent, shored up by buoyant retail sales, and that server sales slumped 7 percent.
Also, Context said that business sales fell 13.2 percent, with desktop sales to
business down 16.2 percent. Mobile PC sales to this sector were down 6.1 percent.
According to Context, small and medium businesses are showing increasing acceptance of
white box system builders.
Analysis: That M$ is responsible in part for crushing already sagging hardware demand
isn''t surprising. The surprising bit is that last item about buyers increasingly
turning to "white box" system builders. One has to wonder how long it will be before
consumers and businesses start to trust "white box" (i.e. Linux) software suppliers?
