XLR8''s dual 550 MHz G4 upgrade program

The great drought is over and new upgrades continue to arrive

XLR8 has announced that it has begun shipping dual 550 MHz upgrades to owners of dual
Power Macintosh G4 systems. This program allows the owners of dual CPU Power Macintosh
G4 systems to achieve a significant jump in speed without changing systems. These
upgrades can deliver a 50 percent boost in performance, according to the company.

Here''s how the drill works:

Customers place their orders on the XLR8 website and choose either the standard or
advance ship upgrade option. The customer will receive an order confirmation via email
with order status and shipping information.

Advance ship option: A loaner kit is shipped to the user. This kit includes a
"loaner" single 550Mhz CPU card to be used while XLR8 upgrades their dual card. It
also includes all instructions and shipping materials. A deposit is required, which is
returned when the loaner card is returned to XLR8.

Standard option: A removal kit is shipped to the user. This kit includes all
instructions and shipping materials for sending the dual card to XLR8 to be upgraded.

After the original card is upgraded, XLR8 tests and qualifies its performance, then
ships it to the customer. The upgrade itself is priced at $429.95 plus shipping and
handling and is available only in the US. These upgrades, like all XLR8 products, are
warranted for two years.

Analysis: Though not the "holy grail" sought by some users (i.e. 1+ GHz upgrades),
this upgrade is available now and quite affordable. Moreover, XLR8 is is upgrading
original Apple hardware (i.e. the CPU card), not shipping a work around that may break
with the next firmware or system update from Apple.
