Maine Republicans aim to break iBook deal

With glowing teacher, student and parent reviews as a backdrop, two conservative
legislators look for a way out
According to the Portland Press Herald, two Maine Republicans have asked the state''s
attorney general whether a four-year agreement between Apple and the state which will
put 36,000 iBooks in the hands of students and teachers can be broken without penalty.
The lawmakers are seeking a backdoor because the state is facing is significant
revenue shortfall -- $93 million.
To date, nine pilot schools have received 2,868 iBooks and 16,700 are scheduled for
delivery next month, the report said.
In a move apparently designed to staunch criticism of the program, Angus King, the
state''s governor, has reportedly said he will allow $10 million of the $25 million
set aside for the computers to be allocated for other needs in the short term to help
bridge the budget shortfall.
Analysis: Maine''s iBook program is a classic example of the "two steps forward, one
step back" paradigm. Each new success, from the initial battle for funding to smoothly
implementing the pilot program, has been met with increased legislative opposition and
growing budget shortfalls. If you are a resident of Maine, now would be a good time to
contact your elected representatives regardless of which side of the fence you may sit.
