Solutions Etcetera acquires SuperCard
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
July 12th 2002
With an OS X version in the works, the "son of HyperCard" gets a new lease on life
Solutions Etcetera has announced the acquisition of SuperCard, a powerful and easy to
use authoring tool sometimes referred to as HyperCard on steroids, from IncWell DMG.
The acquisition culminates over 18 months of development on the next major incarnation
of SuperCard (scheduled for Summer release).
Solutions Etcetera personnel have been responsible for SuperCards development since
June of 1998 so it is only natural that we take the product in house before releasing
what we think is our best version ever, said Scott Simon, SuperCard product manager.
"Like HyperCard before it, when SuperCard was introduced it represented a quantum leap
in the quest to put the power and magic of the Mac in the hands of everyman," said
Mark Lucas, SuperCard lead engineer. "Frankly, though the Mac evolved out from under
it over time, like HyperCard, it was getting a bit long in the tooth. The upcoming
SuperCard 4.0 release will change all that, putting SuperCard once again at the
cutting edge of Macintosh authoring tools by harnessing Apple''s latest technologies
in a development environment powerful enough for the professional but easy and
friendly enough for a child."
SuperCard is used by Mac professionals and hobbyists alike to create just about any
type of application including games, teaching aides, utilities, personal productivity
tools, automation tools, kiosks, and other multimedia rich projects, according to the
company.
Pricing and release information were not available as this report went to press.
Analysis: Years before all-in-one personal information managers appeared, I created my
own using HyperCard. Nothing fancy, but it did serve as my contact manager and
datebook quite nicely for the better part of four years. If SuperCard 4.0 can
replicate the magic that the original HyperCard brought to the stage, Solutions Etc.
will really have something.
