EyeTV: The cat''s meow
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
July 15th 2002

At last there''s a way to watch cable under X

Ready to ditch analog but don''t want the in-your-face interface of Replay? El Gato
has announced the immediate availability of the Eye TV Digital Video Recorder for OS X.

"Eye TV Digital Video Recorder frees you from TV schedules. Find shows you want to see
and watch them when you want to watch them. Pause live television. Skip Commercials.
Record your favorite shows permanently using your CD burner. EyeTV will change the way
you watch television," according to the company''s website

EyeTV includes an integrated program guide that helps users find shows of interest
using keyword searches. By entering the name (or just part of the name) of a favorite
actor, type of show (sports, comedy, action) or show title, EyeTV can tell you when to
tune in.

With its built-in 124-channel cable-ready TV tuner and MPEG encoder to digitize and
send TV signals to a Mac over a standard USB cable (included), this hardware/software
combo can display TV shows in a resizable window or at full screen.

Integrated common sense

"EyeTV can do everything a VCR does without the hassle of bulky VHS tapes," enthuses
El Gato''s website. "EyeTV only needs 650MB of disk space to store an hour of video on
your hard disk [MPEG 1 encoding]. If you want a permanent copy, use your CD recorder
to burn a VideoCD that is playable in your home DVD player."

Perhaps the best feature of EyeTV is its ability to "pause" live TV. A user can attend
to interruptions without missing all or part of the show. Users can pause whatever
they''re watching, whether it''s a live television broadcast or a recorded show, and
then resume watching when they''re ready.

EyeTV is available can be ordered now for just $179 direct from El Gato.

Analysis: I''ve got a perfectly good ATI XclaimTV sitting in a drawer and I''m loathe
to purchase something new. Nevertheless I won''t wait forever for ATI to gets its sh*t
together and El Gato is the best looking and at this point only alternative I''ve seen
for watching TV on a Mac running OS X.
