M$ Office: Get $100 off
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac

Schiller gets his wish as Redmond cuts the price of their benchmark productivity suite
News.com reports that Microsoft is offering mail-in rebates for up to $100 for those
that purchase a new Mac and Office v.X together. The promotion, which runs through
Sept. 30, gives buyers a $50 mail-in rebate when they purchase a new Mac an Office v.
X upgrade, and $100 for those buying a Mac and the full version of the productivity
suite.
Last week, Microsoft Business Unit (MacBU) head Kevin Browne told anyone that would
listen that Apple hasn''t done enough to promote OS X and, thereby, his company''s
sales of Office v.X have suffered. Browne said that the company expected to sell
750,000 copies, but managed less than half that number -- 300,000.
In response, Apple''s head of marketing, Phil Schiller, said that M$'' v.X Office
sales have been poor because the product is priced too high.
Whether you love, hate or merely tolerate M$, you have to give them credit for putting
their money where their mouth is. Moreover, unlike Adobe or Macromedia, Redmond has
been "johnny on the spot" with X-compatible ports of their products.
I for one hope they make up for the perceived shortfall in sales and then some.
Nevertheless, the fastest way to achieving that goal would be a real price reduction
and not a rebate.
