IRIS revs business card reader
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
July 18th 2002
Here''s a must-have tool for businessman who can''t afford to lose touch
The IRIS Group has announced the immediate worldwide availability of the IRIS Business
Card Reader II for Mac OS X.
IBCR II is a time-saving device for keeping a contact database up-to-date at home or
in the office. IRIS is the first company to bring a business card reader solution to
Mac OS X.
"The launch of IRIS Business Card Reader II for Mac OS X illustrates the effectiveness
of IRIS technology and development, and the company''s ability to quickly respond to
specific market needs," said Pierre De Muelenaere, President and CEO, IRIS Group. "I
am delighted that IRIS is now able to offer a complete range of Mac products running
natively on Mac OS X."
"Mac OS X''s momentum is soaring, with more users and applications coming to the
platform everyday, and it remains a tremendously strong business proposition for
developers," said Ron Okamoto, vice president, Worldwide Developer Relations, Apple.
"IBCR II is an easy-to-use business card scanner for journalists, secretaries and
mobile professionals to manage a database of contacts, and we''re delighted to have
another valuable solution for Mac OS X users."
After a business card has been scanned and OCR (optical character recognition)
performed, IBCR II then runs field analysis that automatically assigns the recognized
data to the relevant fields -- company name, first and last name, street, ZIP code and
city, phone, fax, e-mail and web site etc.
The system uses abuilt-in database that gives it the necessary intelligenceto
discriminate the first and last name, city and state, telephone/fax numbers, etc. As
individual countries use their own unique style to list name and contact informtion,
IRIS provides truemultilingual text processing -- 24languages -- for properly
recognizing and assigning values to the appropriate fields.
Users can save contacts in a structured text file -- for instance inthe comma or tab
delimited format -- to import them in anyaddress database, such as the Mac OS X
Address Book. Alternatively, you can send the contacts directly tocontact management
software, such as M$ Entourage, AppleWorks 6, Now Contact and M$ Outlook Express.
The IBCR II requires OS X and will be distributed through IRIS'' existing channels of
IRIS in Europe and the US. MSRP is $200.
