Microsoft Targets AOL, Dot Mac with MSN for OS X
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
August 22nd 2002

MSN for OS X, subscription only.

Microsoft''s commitment to the lucrative, Mac market demographic isn''t over yet,
according to a Reuters story filed at Forbes.com.

In the battle for the Mac desktop, Microsoft will confront AOL/Time Warner head on
with a Mac version of its MSN browser, available during early 2003.

The browser will be titled MSN for Mac OS X, which is aimed squarely at AOL''s
software. Apple recently moved to embrace AOL''s Instant Messenger client, a rival to
Microsoft''s MSN Messenger software. MSN Messenger is free download; it is also
bundled with every copy of Microsoft''s Office v.X for Mac and Microsoft Office 2001:
mac edition.

It is not clear whether MSN Messenger services will overlap with Apple''s own .mac
initiative, which does not offer instant messaging, but does provide a shareable,
publishable calendar (iCal), Homepage web space, iPhoto web publication, anti-virus
software, and iDisk storage, which is accessible directly from the desktop. Junk Mail
is another Apple offering, while MSN plans to support junk mail filtering, digital
photo web publishing, and virus protection.

Microsoft will make the MSN browser services available only to paid subscribers to its
internet access service or to individual or group subsribers to the MSN service itself.

"The goal is basically to reach a new audience," said MSN Product Manager Lisa Gurry.
"We haven''t had a Macintosh client broadly available before."

No prices have been announced by Microsoft, but Apple charges $99 per annum for .mac,
while AOL subscriptions are available in a range of packages. It is also unclear at
this stage in which countries MSN will offer a subscription to the Mac version. In
Australia, for example, AOL does not offer a Mac client or dial-in or cable access for
Macs.
