Slides Publisher: More .Mac bait
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
August 26th 2002
This is a neat tool but it requires a .Mac account and X.2 to view the output
Mac Slides Publisher is the latest bit of eye-candy Apple has created to lure users
into not only purchasing a .Mac account, but also upgrading to Jaguar.
"Publishing a slide show is as easy as selecting a set of pictures in either iPhoto or
the Finger, and dragging them onto the Mac Slides Publisher icon," enthuses a .Mac
webpage (requires a .Mac subscription) dedicated to the Apple widget. "In moments,
your slideshow will be updated and ready for any Mac OS X version 10.2 user to view."
Those wishing to view the slideshow can set up a X.2-equipped Mac in "just four
clicks." Moreover, when a new slideshow is added or an old one updated (one presumes),
updates are automatically sent to subscribers.
Analysis: As mentioned, Slides Publisher is a neat little tool. However, the system
requirements -- X.2 and machine that can run it at a reasonable rate for both the
publisher and those wanting to view the show, as well as a .Mac subscription -- are a
bit much. This is obviously a service/product whose time has not yet come, which begs
the question -- "Why release it now?"
