HP, Dell dumping Works for WordPerfect
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
August 28th 2002

Though not an paradigm-shifting blow, this is a welcome breath of fresh air nonetheless

The Register reports that Hewlett-Packard (HP) is following Dell''s lead and will
pre-install a slimmed-down version of Corel''s WordPerfect suite on some of its
consumer PCs in place of M$'' Works suite.

Corel has posted press releases regarding the deals here (HP) and here (Dell).

These deals not only give the financially troubled software maker, which has report
losses quarter after quarter in recent years, much-need new revenues, but also
bragging rights (i.e. visibility, free marketing) in an increasingly brutal IT market.

The Register speculated that HP and Dell made the move to Word Perfect because
Corel''s suite is likely less expensive. Recent has seen PC makers reduce and reduce
the cost of the software bundles they include with their machines as price-based
competition takes an increasing toll on their margins.

Also, the two largest PC makers likely switched because they could -- M$''
well-publicized legal woes have led to its partial "defanging."

Editor''s note: What a happy story. Corel is a major Mac software developer and news
of its revived fortunes can''t be bad. Also, that after years of legal wrangles (your
tax dollars) M$ is finally getting just deserts is also heartening.
