OWC Discusses Dropping of iDVD Support
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac

You still need an Apple DVD-R to use iDVD.

Larry O''Connor, CEO of Other World Computing, has discussed his company''s recent
decision to drop iDVD support in its new FireWire DVD burner.

In an interview with c|net, O''Connor said that an Apple dealer had been warned of
allegedly infringing upon Apple''s intellectual property and the Digital Millennium
Copyright Act by hacking iDVD.

OWC''s own Mercuty Pro DVD-R/RW FireWire Drive was initially bundled with DVD Enabler,
a osftware extension which permitted Apple''s iDVD to be used with external drives.
Normally, users would need to buy Apple''s DVD Studio Pro to work with non-Apple
DVD-Rs. DVD Enabler permitted iDVD projects to be saved to an external FireWire burner.

However, following a request from Apple, OWC decided to withdraw its DVD Enabler from
market, O''Connor says that OWC is an Apple-certified developer, as well as an
authorised retailer of Apple products. "We''re not out there to offend Apple," said
O''Connor, although he queries whether Apple made the right decision to restrict iDVD
to internal Apple DVD-R burners only, found in some iMac, eMac and Power Mac G4 models.

Analysis: Apparently, it''s fine if you install a Pioneer DVD-R drive in, say, a Power
Mac tower and use iDVD. Presumably, depending on difficulty of installation, this
would also be possible on the eMac and iMac. In the eMac''s case, one company was
providing a DVD-R eMac until Apple stopped them and introduced their own recently.
However, this type of transplant is not usually an operation a non-techie user would
undertake. We suspect other developers may introduce extensions with similar
functionality, however, although it''s unlikely they''ll be bundled with retail
drives. I''m not sure, however, whether this would constitute violating Apple''s EULA
regarding reverse-engineering.
