10.2 utility put your screen saver on your desktop
By michael flaminio, Insanely Great Mac
August 29th 2002
Tired of looking at still images on your desktop? A utility for 10.2 makes putting
things into motion a little easier.
Earlier this week I mentioned a neat trick to place your screen saver as your desktop
background -- complete with full motion. Being a desktop background, the all icons,
applications and the Dock float above the screen saver, rather than behind.
The ability is a part of Mac OS 10.2 and utilizes Quartz Extreme. It should go without
saying, Macs need to run Quartz Extreme to utilize this feature. Putting a motion
screen saver on the desktop does put a tax on the CPU. I''m running about 20-30% CPU
power for the desktop. It may be a good idea to only use this when doing lightweight
computer work, or just to impress friends and family.
The xBack utility from Gideon Softworks places controls in the menu bar. This lets you
switch screen savers, in addition to stopping the background. A quit function is also
available to quit the utility completely. Without xBack, you''d have to control the
desktop background through the Terminal, in addition to switching screen savers from
the Screen Effects preference pane.
As a bonus, Apple''s Flurry can look nifty, but I personally enjoy Euphoria 10.0.1
from Terence M. Welsh.
xBack 2.0 is available as shareware for $12.
