Rumors: 10.2.1 and Paris PowerBooks?
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
August 30th 2002

End of the week drudge and juicy tidbits.

MacOS Rumors is reporting that OS X 10.2.1 is not far away. The bug-fix is reportedly
at build 6D47.

The story says that the revision addresses a number of problems in Mail, Disc
Recording, Classic, File Server, ATI and nVidia drivers, AltiVec DVD acceleration, and
a number of other core system processes.

MOSR says that developers using the build have seen no new features, but report some
important performance gains, particularly in Classic.

On the PowerBook front, it''s been widely mooted that Apple will release a revampled
PowerBook G4 at the Paris Expo in September, which Steve Jobs is keynoting.

An alert MOSR reader notes a special PB promo, available above and beyond educational
discounts for regular consumers, at the AppleStore. The promo apparently runs through
September 25.

Analysis: It''s possible that revved TiBooks could appear September 25, although it
would make more sense for Jobs to announce them in situ, as he did the iBook FireWire
at the 2000 Paris Expo. Of course, they may be announced, but not ready to ship until
the 25th. The other thing is that Apple - like all other companies - runs promos on
the basis of what they expect inventory will look like. In some cases, promos end
early, as supply dries up. The big price discounts on cleared-out Pismos in late 2000
is one example: although the discounts applied until MWSF 2001, everyone snapped up
the only slightly-more-expensive 20GB Pismo 500 over the 10GB Pismo 400. So it got to
the point where you could scarcely find a 500.

But if the 1GHz PB is coming, I want to be first in the discounted 800MHz Ti queue.
