MS adds new keyboards, mice
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
September 3rd 2002

A septet of optical and/or wireless widgets are coming, but it''s less than clear
which are Mac compatible

Microsoft has announced the largest addition of new mice and keyboards to its product
line in its history and is offering seven new products: Wireless Optical Mouse Blue,
Optical Mouse Blue, MultiMedia Keyboard, Natural MultiMedia Keyboard, Wireless Optical
Desktop, Wireless Optical Desktop Pro and Notebook Optical Mouse. Most of these new
products are PC and Macintosh compatible.

"On average, people use a computer nearly five hours each day, an activity second only
to sleep. This tells us that mice and keyboards are important, because they are the
elements people use most to interact with the PC," said Matt Barlow, group product
manager, M$. "Increasingly, people are viewing their mouse and keyboard as an
extension of their personality, much like their cell phone or PDA, and asking for
products that will reflect this attitude."

The new mice and keyboards are expected to cost:

 Optical Mouse Blue: $34.95
 Wireless Optical Mouse Blue: $44.95
 MultiMedia Keyboard: $34.95
 Natural MultiMedia Keyboard: $54.95
 Wireless Optical Desktop: $84.95
 Wireless Optical Desktop Pro: $104.95
 Notebook Optical Mouse: $34.95
* above are M$'' suggested retail prices

Some of the new products scheduled for availability in September include the
industry''s first commercially available input devices featuring Bluetooth.

Editor''s note: Attempting to verify which of these products are and aren''t Mac
compatible isn''t possible. Some of these new products are listed on the pigopolist''s
site (i.e. Wireless Desktop, not Mac compatible) but most are not. Also, it isn''t
clear which of these input devices will be equipped with Bluetooth. The Wireless
Desktop is listed on M$'' as being RF-based.
