PowerLogix Ups the Ante With Dual-Processor 1GHz G4 Upgrades
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
September 4th 2002

Every Power Mac G4, from 350MHz upwards, gets a boost.

Upgrade specialist PowerLogix announced the availabiliy of Dual-Processor G4 upgrades,
with speeds up to 1GHz.

The PowerForce Dual G4 line includes 800MHz and 1GHz models, both running two
processors. Faster models will be available later, says PowerLogix.

"The goal on this project was to keep costs low and still deliver performance on par
with the latest Macs. This is why we resisted the temptation to go with DDR cache,
which offers zero performance advantage but significantly more cost. Instead we put
that cost into a second processor," said Marc Reviel, Director of Engineering for
PowerLogix.

Citing their recent L3 cache white paper, PowerLogix argues that PowerLogix DP models
can be faster than the latest Power Macs, which use DDR cache. The company says that
processors utilizing less expensive SDR cache can perform just as well on older Power
Mac G4s, as the current DP Power Macs'' architecture does not take full advantage of
the higher bandwidth available with DDR memory.

PowerLogix says this means that the 2MB L3 cache on the PowerForce upgrades will
outperform the 1MB L3 on the 867MHz and 1GHz DP models currently offered by Apple.

The PowerForce Dual G4, Series 100 upgrade cards are compatible the following G4
models with a 100MHz bus:

PowerMac G4 ''AGP Graphics'' - 350, 400, 450, 500 MHz
PowerMac G4 ''Gigabit Ethernet'' - Single 400, Dual 450 or 500 MHz.

The PowerForce G4 Series 133 upgrade cards are compatible with the following PowerMac
G4s running at 133 MHz bus:

PowerMac G4 ''Digital Audio'' - 466, 533, 667, 733, Dual 533 MHz
PowerMac G4 ''QuickSilver'' - 733, 867, Dual 800 MHz
PowerMac G4 ''QuickSilver 2002'' - 800, 933, Dual 1GHz

The G4 Cube can also be upgraded, but PowerLogix recommends a DP 800MHz processor, due
to the Cube''s lower-capacity power supply. The company anticipates lower-power
Motorola CPUs in future, which will then permit the Cube to run at higher clock
speeds. A single-processor 1GHz upgrade is also available for the Cube.

The PowerForce upgrades will be available in 2-3 weeks through Waypoint Distribution ,
PowerLogix Japan, and PowerLogix Europe. PowerLogix''s estimated street prices are:

PowerForce Dual G4 Series 100 @ 800MHz $799
PowerForce Dual G4 Series 100 @ 1 GHz $1199

PowerForce Dual G4 Series 133 @ 867MHz $799
PowerForce Dual G4 Series 133 @ 1 GHz $1199
