Apple releases updated tower servers
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
September 4th 2002
The mothership has updated its PowerMac-based servers
Apple is once again offering PowerMac G4 servers. Two models are available -- dual
1GHz and dual 1.25GHz. Naturally, customers can choose a BTO model as well.
All configurations ship with Mac OS X Server 10.2 and a pre-installed, unlimited
client license, according to Macworld UK.
These models are available for:
 dual 1GHz, 256MB, 120GB, GeForce4 MX, combo -- $2,999
 dual 1.25GHz, 512MB, 120GB, Radeon 9000*, combo -- $3,499
 BTO dual 1.25GHz, 2GB, 120GB, Radeon 9000*, combo --$4,699
*I''m assuming that the Fastest and Ultimate options include a Radeon 9000 as the
PowerMac G4 server description lists "ATI and nVidia" AGP cards as the available cards
and no AGP card is listed for either model.
It is worth noting that the 1.25GHz models won''t ship for six to eight weeks.
Analysis: Given the ponderous data back-up needs of a server, it seems a bit cheap of
Apple to not provide these models with SuperDrives. 256MB of RAM in the entry-level
model also seems a bit cheap as well. However, if Macworld UK''s statement that all
models ship with an unlimited seat license, then it is perhaps forgivable that Steven
P didn''t consent to including the capability to write DVDs.
Then again, if all you need to serve is eight users (Apple servers traditionally ship
with a 10-seat license), the extra RAM and/or SuperDrive would be highly preferable
choices, wouldn''t they?
