Britannica releases new reference suite
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
September 4th 2002
The company''s three-encyclopedia reference library is available on DVD or CD, but
only runs on X
Encyclopaedia Britannica has announced the release of its 2003 Ultimate Reference
Suite, an expanded multimedia product for information seekers of all ages, from grade
school to graduate school and beyond.
"The Ultimate Reference Suite is a complete home reference source that makes finding
information easy for everyone -- young, old and in between," said Britannica CEO Ilan
Yeshua. "Young students can use it, then advance to the next level when they''re
ready, and adults can use it all their lives. Because it has the Encyclopaedia
Britannica, you never outgrow it."
The new product, available on CD-ROM and DVD for Windows and Macintosh computers (Mac
OS X.1 or higher), breaks new ground in multimedia reference by providing
comprehensive information for everyone from elementary school to adulthood in one
place. The product includes three encyclopedias: the Encyclopaedia Britannica and two
others for students in the early and middle grades. Each encyclopedia forms the
cornerstone of an integrated "reference library" that includes a dictionary,
thesaurus, atlas and historical timelines appropriate to the age of the user.
Britannica''s Ultimate Reference Suite, which is in stores now, carries a suggested
retail price of $69.95. Other editions in the company''s 2003 product line will be
released in the months ahead.
Analysis: Didn''t Britannica dump us not too long ago? Whatever the case, it''s good
to see this important reference suite updated and ready-to-run for "the rest of us."
It is worth nothing again that, for better and worse, Britannica isn''t offering a
Classic-compatible version.
