More Plaudits for Jaguar, iMac 17
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
September 4th 2002
Jaguar + DVD-R iMac = Incentive to Switch.
USAToday has taken a shine to Jaguar and the 17" iMac, praising the top-of-the-line
LCD model with its DVD-R recorder.
The reviewer is particularly taken by the ease of back-up provided by the DVD-R drive:
just two discs backed up the whole system and files - versus a pile of CDRs or Zip
disks.
iDVD also gets the nod, with easy DVD compilations, although the rear-mounted
headphone jack - a flaw now rectified in the latest Power Mac G4s - came in for some
criticism.
At $1,999, the article says, the iMac 17 represents solid value, but not a bargain.
On Jaguar, USAToday says that it''s "worthwhile even for satisfied users of older
operating systems", with a "lovely, well-thought-out interface". They''re convinced
that Apple''s ''Switch'' campaign "can snag real converts."
Spring-loaded folders, Sherlock 3, iChat, Mail''s Junk Mail filters, Inkwell and
better Windows networking make X.2 worth the entry price, the article says. The ease
of Windows networking could be improved though, says the review.
Analysis: These sorts of reviews will probably do more to sell 17" iMacs than Jaguar,
as most people don''t know jack (or could care less) about their OS, so long as it
works. (I still know plenty of long-time Mac users who swear their Mac runs "Windows
95"). But it''s clear that much of the general media ''s reservations about 10.1.x
have been put to rest by X.2, particularly as the hardware to run it gets better
graphics cards and more processing power than ever to run it.
