Mobility Radeon 9000 Coming to PowerBook G4?
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
September 6th 2002

The TiBook needs a refresh to see it though until January - and now''s the time.

The answer is almost certainly "yes", but the question is "when?" MacOS Rumors suggest
it may be withiin six weeks.

With Jobs'' keynote at the Paris Apple Expo looming, both Mac users and analysts will
be looking for a refresh of the Pro PowerBook line in order to bolster pre-Xmas sales
and boost quarterly revenues.

MOSR are predicting 867MHz and 1GHz processors to be announced at Paris, but
availabllity is not likely to arrive until some time later (i.e., around six weeks).
This would make sense, given that that the Mobility Radeon 9000 has only been
announced recently and immedate shipping volumes are likely to be less than optimum.

A graphics card boost on its own wouldn''t be sufficient to push mainstream buyers to
a revved TiBook, but a minor increase in clock speed (if 133MHz can be said to be
"minor") would give Ti the legs to run until MWSF January, when it is likely to be
replaced by an altogether different model PowerBook.

As IGM and other sites have suggested, it would be possible to include a DVD-R in the
PowerBook G4 as an option, now that a slimline model to fit inside the TiBook''s 1"
thick chassis is available. Even as a BTO option, this would be a winner.

However, Apple/Jobs are much more likely to want to make a major marketing splash with
the inclusion of DVD-R on the PowerBook, which means waiting until January in all
likelihood. Prices on notebook DVD-R are also likely to have fallen appreciably by
January.

At this point, Apple have not said that there will be no new hardware announcements
at the Paris Expo. Until that happens, we can assume that some rabbit will be pulled
out of the hat very soon.
