Wiebetech to bundle MacDrive
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
September 13th 2002
With MediaFour''s utility loaded, PCs can read and write to a Mac-formatted disk
WiebeTech and Mediafour have announce that MediaFour''s MacDrive 5 software will now
be bundled with most WiebeTech storage products. MacDrive 5 allows any Windoze box to
read and write disk volumes that have been formatted on a Mac. The new software will
be available on products shipping from mid-September.
Customers are constantly moving FireWire and USB storage devices between Macs and
PCs, said James Wiebe, president, WiebeTech. Until now, this has been done by
formatting the disk with PC [Fat-32] format. This has caused problems, especially for
customers with large files that potentially break the 4GB limitation of the PC format.
Customers have also experienced significant trouble when moving files between WinXP
systems and Macs, especially OS X, continued Wiebe. MacDrive solves these problems
completely by making the Mac HFS+ [Mac Extended] file format a native format on
Windows computers.
Brian Landwehr, president, Mediafour, said, We are very pleased with WiebeTech''s
decision to provide MacDrive 5 software to their customers. Our award-winning
MacDrive software, combined with their award-winning hardware, provides a world-class
way to transfer large files between platforms. The power of MacDrive has never been
shown more dramatically than when used with an ultra-fast, ultra-small WiebeTech drive.
MacDrive 5 provides an easy and seamless way for PCs and Macs to exchange documents.
One of the most significant features of MacDrive 5 is Windows XP compatibility, as
well as support for Microsoft Windows ME, 98, 95, NT 4.0 and 2000.
MacDrive 5 will be bundled with and the new bus-powered Super DesktopGB; the
pocket-sized MicroGB; and all three DriveDock products which provide FireWire bridges
for 3.5-inch IDE drives, according to the company.
Editor''s note: With X.2''s improved PC networking support, MacDrive is a largely
superfluous product. However, when you take your FireWire or USB drive to another
location you lose Jaguar''s built-in PC-spanking, chewy goodness. Bundling solves this
problem. Two good companies getting together to make the Mac world a tad better.
