This new OCR engine recognizes printed text in 91 languages
IRIS, Inc, which specializes in OCR and scanning technologies, has announced the
immediate availability of the Mac OS X version of its USB IRISPen II. The IRISPen II
allows users to scan printed text, figures, bar codes and handwritten numbers and
instantaneously input them to any Macintosh application (such as word processors,
spreadsheets, e-mail, online databases, accounting programs, etc.).
Features include:
� Recognition of 91 languages
� Recognition of gray level documents (The only pen scanner to do so)
� Ability to read bitmap documents, improved reading of low-quality documents
� Ability to accurately read text on colored backgrounds
� New multi-line mode influences the natural character of text-to-speech (speech
synthesis)
� Ability to read text and bar codes simultaneously
The USB IRISPen II, which is Classic and X compatible, will be distributed through
retail distribution and sales channels in Europe and the US, but its also available
direct from IRIS. The Standard version is available for $129 (SRP) and an executive
version (which includes speech capability) is available for $199 (SRP).
Editor''s note: Scanning was one of the areas that users found X through X.1.5
lacking. To date I haven''t read any complaints vis-a-vis scanner support under
Jaguar. Thoughts, complaints or praise anyone?
