The Hard Facts of IBM's PowerPC 970 Emerge
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
October 14th 2002
Apple, IBM, Motorola still "No comment".
As IGM reported last week, IBM has a 64-bit processor in the works, which has been
mooted for use by Apple.
Following speculation last week, Forbes.com now reports that Apple will be the major
buyer of the 64-bit chip.
The PowerPC 970 will reportedly run at up to 1.8GHz initially. As the 64-bit chip can
move significantly more data at a time than a 32-bit processor - such as Intel and
AMD's x86-based CPUs - IBM PowerPC 970 chips should perform noticeably better than x86
chips clocked at the same speed.
IBM says in the Forbes article that the chip would go into volume production late
2003. The 970 is a derivative or 'lite' version of the Power4, used in a range of IBM
servers. It retains backward compatibility with 32-bit systems.
The AIM PowerPC alliance, which officially dissolved in 1998, refused to comment on
potential buyers of the CPU or its possible application in a desktop environment.
