Newer Tech Adds Battery-Saving 500MHz G4 Pismo Upgrade
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
October 15th 2002
Less heat, more juice for Pismo.
Newer Technology today announced it was now using a new, 'low-power' PPC G4 in its
Pismo upgrades.
The company claims the new 500MHz processor not only reduces internal temperatures by
up to 20 degrees Celsius, but also extends usable battery time by 20 minutes on
average.
Newer's NUpowr G4/500 provides a 1MB backside cache, as well as the advantages of
AltiVec, to the PowerBook G3 FireWire (Pismo). The upgrade supports up to 1GB of RAM.
As previously, your Pismo must be shipped to Newer in Wichita, Kansas, for removal of
the original CPU and its replacement with a G4. Newer says turnaround is now improved,
at approximately two weeks. The upgrade carries a two-year warranty. The price of the
upgrade is $299. More information is available at Newer Technology's website.
Analysis: Both the PowerLogix and Newer Pismo upgrades require you send in the
PowerBook, which means downtime. But reader reports suggest that all of the advantages
of the Pismo are retained with much more sprightly OS X performance. As a relatively
inexpensive alternative to a used Ti 400 or 500, it's worth considering seriously.
