TEAC First to Announce 2x Notebook DVD-R
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
October 16th 2002
Industry-leading burn speeds in new portable recorder.
Sony, Toshiba and Pioneer's recent announcements of slimline DVD-RW drives for
notebooks has been trumped - by TEAC.
According to CD-R Info, TEAC Japan have announced a 2x DVD-R burner for portables.
While its rivals burners are limited to 1x burn speed with both DVD-Rs and DVD-RWs,
the TEAC doubles write speed on DVD-R to 2x. DVD-RW remains at 1x.
The DV-W22E also supports 2x DVD-RAM, 16x CD-R, 10x (HS-RW), and reads CDs at 24x and
DVD-ROMs at 8x. The drive also features buffer underrun protection for both CDR/W and
DVD-R/W burning.
Analysis: This is sure to put the cat among the pigeons, although we'd doubt Apple
would use this drive, unless they want to next PowerBook to lead the industry. Apple
doesn't have a history of using TEAC components, Given Apple's link with Pioneer,
these are the slimline DVD-R/RW drives we are likely to see in the PowerBooks. The big
issue, however, is going to be price, as slimline versions - particularly as they're
new to the market right now - invariably cost more than their desktop cousins.
DVD-R/RW-equipped notebooks, we'll bet, will be very hot sellers over the next few
months and will drive portable PC market growth. And, what's more, they're just plain
cool.
