Report: Canadian Software Piracy Alive and Well
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
October 16th 2002
Ranks provinces by extent of piracy.
An independent study prepared by the International Planning & Research Corporation
states that says that software piracy in Canada cost over $CDN 150 million and around
12,000 jobs in 2001.
The report was released by the Canadian Alliance Against Software Theft (CAAST) and
the Business Software Alliance (BSA); the former includes members such as Apple
Canada, Symantec and Adobe Systems.
Canadian provinces are ranked for the first time, in order of the extent of piracy
determined by the study. Prince Edward Island had the highest level (50.8%), with
Newfoundland coming in at # 2 on 50.2%. The lowest level of piracy was found in
Quebec, with 32.4% of business software in use pirated. The average is 38%.
Analysis: These figures might bear some semblance to reality, but we doubt it. Both
the estimates, and the percentage of pirated or unlawful business software, can only
be guestimates at best. Even home users with several computers would be hard-pressed
to actually know whether some of their retail software was legally installed or not.
Under Apple's EULA, for example, you may install a copy of OS X.2, say, on your
desktop and a backup on your PowerBook. But you're not to use them at the same time (I
think - but can't be sure without reading the license). If you install it on a second
desktop, you're in violation of the EULA.
