'iBrotha': Fighting the good fight
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
October 17th 2002

Social commentary and a good dollop of humor illuminate the struggles of a man on a
mission

Wired has the pleasantly unexpected story of iBrotha, an eight-minute film that
examines bigotry, fanaticism and how far not to take your love of the Mac. This short
stars Neil Rayment -- who plays a villain in the upcoming Matrix Reloaded.

An independent production, iBrotha is about a young man so obsessed with Macs he
becomes a Malcolm X-like revolutionary, fighting computer bigotry -- by any means
necessary.

"It's about that whole religious fervor that grabs Mac users the way it doesn't with
users of other platforms," writer/director Jake Barnes, a self-described "recovering
Mac addict," told Wired.

The cast of characters of the film includes telling figures like Brother Ive, Brother
Newton and an original 512K Mac. One setting finds the uber-faithful fighting platform
prejudice at the "Temple of Mac," a Nation of Islam-like place of worship.

Barnes plans to show his short at the Turner, Bafta and Cannes film festivals.

The real thing

The movie's website is dedicated to the memory of Rodney Lain, an online Mac columnist
and evangelist who wrote under the "iBrotha" moniker. Lain committed suicide in June.

Like the film's Brother Copland character, Lain was a committed Mac promoter. Although
he had a full-time day gig, he worked nights and weekends selling Macs and "spreading
the word" at superstores near his Minneapolis home.

Editor's note: Lain was a credit to us all and I sincerely hope this movie does
justice to his memory.
