iMac, iPod named finalists 'PC Mag' awards

Like other makers, Apple's sales have stagnated. Yet, Cupertino has earned far more
accolades

PC Magazine has announced that Apple's LCD iMac and iPod mp3 player are finalists for
the 19th annual Awards for Technical Excellence. The awards recognize individuals and
products that have advanced the state of technology and set new standards for
technical innovation in 2002. The winners will be announced on Nov 18, at The
Venetian Hotel in Lost Wages (Las Vegas), during Comdex Fall. All winners will be
posted on the Web (here) and will be featured in the Dec 24 issue of PC Magazine.

"PC Magazine tests thousands of products each year and helps provide benchmarks for
the entire IT industry," said Michael J. Miller, editor-in-chief. "So this year,
recognizing several important trends, we added new award categories that help define
the growth of the industry
including, laptop PCs, mobile devices, components and protocols. Good luck to all of
the finalists."

The iMac has been named a finalist in the Desktop PC category along with HP's Media
Center PC and the NEC PowerMate eco. Also, the iPod has been named in the Mobile
Device category as have the Handspring Treo Communicator family and the T-Mobile
Pocket PC Phone Edition.

Mac-related products named as finalists include ATI's Radeon 9700 Pro, nVidia GeForce
4 cards and SuSE Linux 8.1.

Editor's note: One has to wonder how many accolades and glowing reviews Apple needs to
earn before its sales actually increase.

The iPod, which was designed as a one-trick pony, is a category where the other two
products are full-fledged PDAs. I think that says a lot for the iPod's exceptional
simplicity and downright usefulness.

BTW, if you haven't tried SuSE Linux 8.1 yet, you should give it a try. It's quite
smooth.
