BTO PowerBook price slashed, RAM promo added

The latest scat samples collected at the online Apple Store point to new models soon
Deals-on-the-Web, an affiliate of The Mac Observer, reports that Apple has lowered the
price of the high-end BTO PowerBook by $360. Also, the ready-to-ship 667 and 800 MHz
models feature an instant rebate on any memory upgrade.
When one orders or updates the subtotal after choosing a memory upgrade for a
PowerBook, Apple subtracts $110 from the total. This is straight forward and an
approach the company should use more often, as opposed to rebates which cause much
angst and anger.
Whether or not one is still eligible for the "Double Your Memory" promo isn't clear.
It seems increasingly apparent, with PowerBook prices on the slide and iBook orders on
hold, that we will see updated portables very soon.
Moreover, the entry-level iMac is widely reported to be out-of-stock across the US.
And, as we have reported in the past, the 15-inch model is expected to be phased out
entirely and a new 19-inch LCD iMac announced. With X'mas looming and sales in the
toilet now would be the time to launch new models.
