iTunes Gets Ogg Vorbis MP3 Encoding
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
November 3rd 2002
Higher-quality MP3s via a free QuickTime plugin.
MacOSX Hints note the release of a free QuickTime 6 plugin that lets iTunes and/or
QuickTime 6 encode MP3s using an Ogg Vorbis encoder.
The plugin works with iTunes 3.0 (OS X only) and QuickTime 6, but may work with
earlier versions of iTunes. Using a command line (details at MacOSX Hints), you can
change all your Ogg music files to open with iTunes.
The high-quality MP3 encoder is widely available in a number of OS 9 applications,
such as N2MP3.
MacOSX Hints' article notes that burning Ogg Vorbis-encoded MP3 files from iTunes has
not been tested. YMMV. However, all Ogg-encoded MP3s should work fine with your iPod.
