Rumor: MWSF PowerBook G4 Gets VBT, Possible 16" LCD
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
November 3rd 2002
The real new PowerBook takes the stage in January.
O'Grady's PowerPage is reporting that mock-ups of the next major PowerBook G4
revision, due to be introduced at MacWorld San Francisco in January 2003, will feature
'variable bus timing'.
The big news is that Apple has reportedly done significant work on the PowerBook's
heat levels, increasing the effectiveness of heat transfer. Apple has also made design
changes to the CPU's cooling system.
A mock-up of the next PowerBook's design had a different display from current models,
according to the article, which may be a 16" LCD [although the mock-up - not a
prototype - makes this an uncertainty]. Sony, for example, already offers a 16"
screen. Displays will also be brighter, with new backlights for the LCD.
PowerPage sources claim VBT can effectively double battery life, through the CPU's use
of 'smart' power management, which allow the processor to shift into high or low mode
when performing routine, repetitive tasks, such as playing a DVD-ROM or audio CD.
Analysis: A 16" display (perhaps as a BTO 'Ultimate' PB G4 system), would certainly
grab some attention. Given falling LCD prices (with a 19" LCD iMac supposedly around
the corner), it would not be prohibitively expensive for Apple to implement either.
The cooling work suggests not only is Apple working on increasing the working life of
internal components, but also that the new PowerBook (not be confused with next
Wednesday's anticipated minor revision) may sport a seriously fast architecture and
processor.
But the question remains: what will they make the case material out of? Better Airport
reception is a must for the PB.
