News.com: Cheaper, faster iBook this week

By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac

Apple last updated its consumer portables in May and speculation on burnished models
has been rampant for weeks

Quoting unnamed sources, News.com reports that Apple plans to drop prices by $200
across the iBook product line. The entry-level model is expected to sell for $990 and
include CPUs that are 100MHz faster than previous models.

Specs are expected roughly as follows:

 700MHz G3, CD and 12.1-inch LCD for $990;
800MHz G3, Combo drive and 12.1-inch LCD for $1,299; and
 800MHz G3, Combo drive and 14-inch screen for $1,599.

The News.com report states that some resellers can already order the burnished iBooks
and actual shipments will begin shortly after the product launch, which they have been
told is set for tomorrow (Nov 6).

Although News.com early sighted the reduced at the online , those prices have since
been replaced with the previous tags.

Also, News.com reports that PowerBook prices in an online ad also reflected a
reduction of $200 -- i.e. the entry-level starts at $2,299. Again, however, Apple has
corrected its mistake.

With an Apple event looming it seems likely that the company will also its
long-promised Xserve RAID storage system -- designed to hold up to 14 HDDs for 1.68TB
of storage -- which is expected "before the of the year."

We're also expecting X.2.2 to be released tomorrow.

News.com's report confirms an earlier IGM report by Remy Davison posted over the
weekend.

Editor's note: Although mention in reports here and elsewhere, boosting standard
memory configuration would seem a reasonable step given low RAM prices and that most
competing PC notebooks ship with 256MB.
