No Windoze on board

A high-flying entrepreneur suggests the only way to stop the viruses that afflict PCs
is to 'just stop using Windows'

Wired has a write up on Doug Humphrey, a successful Internet entrepreneur, and how
reduced his companies' support costs to almost nothing by switching to Macs. Also,
guests on the refurbished 120-foot former British Royal Navy coastal patrol craft that
he uses as a pleasure craft are banned from using Wintel computers.

"We forced everyone to go to Macs for the desktops," he said. "The support load
dropped to almost nothing and the only complaints were from people who couldn't play
games on their machines any longer. So sorry, no games at work. We are so mean.

"We avoid the Windows operating system since it is such a huge security risk," the
large, gregarious Humphrey told Wired. "We didn't want to have viruses blowing up
systems that we depend on for navigation and monitoring engines and other systems.
And, since nothing seems to be able to stop all of these Windows viruses, the best way
to win is to just stop using Windows."

Humphrey is the founder of Digex, an early Internet service provider. He sold that
venture at the height of the Internet boom and pocketed millions, and has since
started a number of ventures including Core Location (telecom web hosting) and Cidera
(broadband via satellite).

According to Wired, the company uses Unix behind the scenes. But on the boat, it's
Macs only. In fact, the 170-ton warship's navigation system is controlled using a Mac.

"I've used Macs for the last six years," he told Wired. "I had a PC before that, but
Macs were fun and more reliable. I don't play computer games so that might help
explain why I don't miss the Windows box."

Editor's note: Mr Humphrey might be surprised at the large number of quality,
cutting-edge games available for the Mac. Then again, his employees might have already
figured that hour-burning fact out for themselves.
