Apple's Push into Small Business
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
November 7th 2002
As users grow more disillusioned with the costs of Windows, they're looking at
alternatives.
Newsfactor reports on Apple's new push into the small business market, where it
appears there is growing anti-Windows sentiment.
One of the main reasons small biz may turn to Apple is total cost of ownership (TCO).
As Mac users and Mac-equipped enterprises have long known, initial higher purchase
costs are generally off-set by lower costs associated with Mac ownership, maintenance
and training.
Newsfactor's article cites Apple director of product marketing for consumer
applications, Peter Lowe, who has stated that enterprise is on Apple's s radar. XServe
is one of the products directed at business, which is priced aggressively, compated
with comparable Dell and HP solutions. XServe also features the highest storage
capacity in its class. Apple recently almost tripled its server market share - albeit
from a very low base.
Software licensing is one area where business is increasingly finding itself at odds
with Miicrosoft. The article cites an IDC survey which found that around 38% of
businesses had examined Windows alternatives, such as Mac and Linux.
Analysis: One disappointing things that comes out of this article is one survey which
says that while a large proportion of business users would like to 'switch', they do
not feel "there is currently a viable alternative to the Windows desktop". That's a
steep hurdle Apple has to overcome.
