iBook: The Education Prices
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
November 7th 2002

How Apple Ed prices stack up.

A quick trip down to the AppleStore gives us some insight into Apple Education's
prices for students, instructors and institutions.

For instance, the base iBook goes for a mere $949 for individual education purchasers,
although RAM upgrade prices for the CD and Combo models drop to a miserly $8 and $9
off respectively when you order Apple RAM. Still, for those counting their pennies...

Apple are pushing the 'Ultimate' iBook fairly hard. The retail version of the 14.1"
Combo-drive equipped iceBook (640/40GB) goes for $1,849 as of 11/6. Education pricing
lowers that to $1,791. Plus, Apple are taking an extra $106 off right now. To us, it
sounds like there are more 14.1" iBooks - possibly - in inventory than they'd like.

Interestingly enough, the institutional purchasing page is a little different - it
highlights (with little Aqua buttons) the fact that the iBooks run OS X and OS 9. As
some readers have pointed out here at IGM, many education apps have not been ported to
X (and many, presumably, never will be).

It's pretty safe to say that OS 9 will be important in schools for some time to come
(think of some older Macs in a lab not running X, for instance; or a school which
isn't about to rush out and buy a pile of OS X licenses to run on older hardware). Or,
the site license for Office, say, is for 2001.

What the Ed market's reaction to 1/1/2003 will be is another issue, as every Mac they
buy after that will boot up only in X.

But for the individual ed purchaser, it's a nice time to be alive: there's that867MHz
PowerBook G4 for a 'mere' $2,069. What a steal.
