Macnewz.com offers unfiltered snapshot of the Mac Web
By Michael Flaminio, Insanely Great Mac
November 7th 2002

A new Web site attempts to index the entire Mac Web for daily news and information

MacNewz.com is a new Mac Web site from the creator of SiteLink. The Web site aims to
catalog all daily Mac news from around the Web in near real-time fashion. MacNewz
provides a snapshot of what's happening at that moment in the Mac universe. If you're
thinking that there's a site like this already called MacSurfer, you've got an idea of
what MacNewz is about.

MacSurfer is the venerable Mac link site, highlighting the top stories on the Mac Web.
The primary difference between MacSurfer and MacNewz is how the content is filtered.
MacSurfer's editorial staff meticulously combs the Web and carefully selects articles
that best fit the needs of its readers. MacNewz is completely unfiltered with
basically everything from everyone being posted. The only controls on MacNewz is who
gets listed.

Each site offers to cater to a specific audience. MacSurfer readers can rest assured
that someone is looking out for you. All Web links have been verified and at least
someone thought it was a good story, worthy of your time. MacNewz appeals to the more
obsessive among us, wanting to know everything and wishing to make their own decisions
of what's worth their time. With Macnewz, it's about the information.

"The ultimate goal today is to provide a news service that Mac users can visit quickly
and see the latest breaking news from all the best Mac news sites on one page, with
one consistent design," site creator John Brochu told IGM. "MacNewz offers a simple
one-page listing that also includes summaries in many cases."

MacNewz is completely automated, pulling content from multiple sites to be compiled
into a single page. MacNewz pulls content from Insanely Great Mac using an XML output
generated by us every 15 minutes. MacNewz then takes our formated output and placed it
into a database, which then is displayed on their Web site. A similar process is used
for most other sites. Brochu said he started MacNewz to fit his personal tastes when
searching for his daily Mac news fix. He hopes that others will find his creation as
useful as he does.

Analysis:

One thing I like about MacNewz is how it integrates RSS content from many sources into
a useable form.

I find that there are two types of people surfing Mac Web sites, Ron's dubbed Alpha
Geeks who absorb everything they can, and the more casual users who just like to stay
on top of stuff. Each user will find something interesting in both MacNewz and
MacSurfer, both sites I plan to visit regularly.
