Apple, IDG Still Feuding, But Jobs Will Keynote
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
November 8th 2002
Two companies at am impasse, but the San Francisco expo goes on.
Despite threats not to allow Apple to attend MWSF in January, it's business-as-usual
come January 7, when Steve Jobs will step on stage to deliver his MacWorld keynote.
Previously, IDG World Expo CEO, Charlie Greco, said publicly that Apple might been
banned from MWSF, but he recanted quickly afterwards. The two sides have met for
negotiations in recent weeks, but no consensus has been reached at this stage,
according to an article at the Boston Globe
However, despite the current impasse, arising from Apple's refusal to attend MacWorld
Boston, which is the venue selected by IDG to replace MacWorld New York from 2004,
Apple CEO Steve Jobs and Marketing VP Phil Schiller will both address MWSF.
Apple may still boycott MWNY in Juily 2003 in response to IDG's move to Boston, but
the company is still considering its options and has not made any official
announcement.
Analysis: None of this does either side any good, but our bet is that Apple is more
important to the Expo than any other exhibitor. While all developers and hardware
manufacturers are important, the show will attract considerably less publicity without
Apple in attendance (Apple issuing press passes and flying in journalists
all-expenses-paid from all four corners of the earth helps, of course). IDG might very
well find it is the loser in this contest, if it tries to back Apple into a corner.
