WiebeTech announces 250 GB FireWire drive
By Michael Flaminio, Insanely Great Mac
November 13th 2002

New higher capacity DesktopGB external drives available

WiebeTech announced a new addition to its DesktopGB line, a new 250 GB external
FireWire drive. The new product uses an updated case, which brings ATA-6 compatibility
for FireWire, and ATA-5 support for USB 1 and USB 2. ATA-6 drives are not compatible
with USB 1 and USB 2, according to WiebeTech.

This product provides support for ATA-6 drives which is not available in the regular
version of DesktopGB. It is also less expensive than Super DesktopGB because it is
AC-powered, not bus-powered. Finally, it maintains USB compatibility for ATA-5
drives, said James Wiebe, CEO of WiebeTech. As a result, it is the perfect choice
for users who want inexpensive, extremely high performance support for high capacity
drives.

WiebeTech is also offering an upgrade path for existing customers looking use the new
ATA-6 enclosures. The upgrade is available for $69.95 and requires customers to send
their drive in for the upgrade. The upgrade includes a bridgeboard modification and
updated firmware.

The new 250 GB version retails for $559.95 and is available now from WiebeTech LLC.

Analysis

Drive sizes continue to push upwards, and WiebeTech is one of the first resellers to
offer a product at this capacity. The 250 GB drive is a bit pricey, but has the lowest
price/GB in WiebeTech's DesktopGB line. An alternative to one big drive, of course
would be multiple external drives, which has the benefits of spreading purchase costs
out over time, in addition to distributing risk of a drive failure, and perhaps costs,
depending on what deals can be found for not buying the latest/greatest.
