PowerBook G4/867: Slower than G4/800?

Software bug in 10.2.1 may prevent new Ti from displaying its true colors.
MacsOnly! have tested a new PowerBook G4/867 against the superseded G4/800. On a
number of benchmarks, the older 800MHz machine dusted the brand new PB 867.
The G4/800 won every test, by around 10%, or more in some cases. The article says
that, on this data, the 867 benches only around as fast as a superseded G4/667.
However, there may be an explanation in the works: MacsOnly were able to test only
with OS X 10.2.1, as 10.2.2 only became available recently. The article speculates
that there may have been a bug in the special version of 10.2.1 which came with the
PowerBook, which could keep the CPU operating at a lower speed, as it it were saving
on battery juice. They'll be testing further using OS 10.2.2.
Analysis: I'd be even more surprised if this happened with a 1GHz TiBook. MacsOnly are
probably right to suspect software could be the culprit here. We think you're pretty
safe in buying an 867 in the knowledge that it will dust an 800 - so long as you
install the right version of OS X.
