Apple Keychain First Aid fixes annoying password nags

Apple this week released a utility to fix minor problems with its OS X Keychain
Apple's Keychain First Aid is a small utility aimed to fix a number of annoying
problems with OS X's Keychain. The Keychain keeps tracks of users' passwords for
everything from email, Web, .Mac and iChat. Ideally, the Keychain unlocks itself when
a user logs in, allowing transparent security access to numerous applications and
services. While the Keychain functions correctly, users may receive continuous prompts
unnecessarily to unlock access for certain applications.
According to Apple:
- Under some circumstances, changes to a user's .Mac password might not be retained in
the .Mac tab of the Internet preference pane.
- Addresses an issue where Mail and iChat could continue to prompt users for their
password after saving it in the keychain.
- Resolves an issue where a user could be unexpectedly prompted to unlock the keychain
after changing account information or home directory location.
- Fixes a potential issue where duplicate Mail passwords could appear in the keychain.
- Fixes an issue where multiple references to the same keychain could appear in the
Keychain Access application.
- Addresses a potential issue where applications are unable to retrieve items from a
keychain file located on a network volume.
- Fixes an issue where saved passwords could not be read if they were created or
modified by certain pre-release versions of Jaguar.
- Fixes an issue where a Keychain dialog can sometimes prompt for permission to
decrypt a "(null)" item.
I've had some of these problems since the day I installed OS X. The Keychain First Aid
found numerous errors, and quickly fixed them. The Keychain First Aid is for Mac OS X
10.1 or newer and is available as a free download.
